Your go-to Frequently Asked Disney Cruise Questions for stress-free planning
We love the magic of a Disney Cruise. Whether it’s watching your kids light up when they spot Mickey at sea, or sipping your favorite beverage on your veranda while the ocean stretches endlessly ahead. But before you get to that “we’re really doing this” moment, there are a lot of questions.
As a travel agent team that plans Disney Cruise Line vacations every day, we’ve heard them all, especially from first-time cruisers. This guide is designed to answer the most common (and most important) questions so you can move from overwhelmed to excited.
Think of this as your insider-friendly, no-jargon Disney Cruise FAQ – with real answers that help you plan smarter.
21 Disney Cruise Questions Answered
1. Is a Disney Cruise worth the price?
Short answer: for the right traveler, absolutely.
Disney Cruise Line is not the cheapest cruise option, but it consistently delivers value. You’re paying for:
- Exceptional service (often 1 crew member for every 2-3 guests)
- Broadway-quality entertainment
- Rotational dining with themed restaurants
- Included kids’ clubs that are truly next-level
- Immersive Disney storytelling
For families, especially first-timers, the ease and quality often outweigh the higher cost.
2. What’s included in a Disney Cruise?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that cruises nickel-and-dime you constantly. Disney includes more than most.
Included:
- Accommodations
- Rotational dining (3 restaurants)
- Snacks and soft drinks
- Kids clubs (ages 3 – 17 years)
- Broadway-style shows
- Character meet-and-greets
- Pools, splash areas, and entertainment
Not included:
- Small World Nursery (ages 6 months – 3 years)
- Alcohol
- Specialty dining (like adult-only restaurants)
- Shore excursions
- Spa treatments
- Gratuities
3. When is the best time to take a Disney Cruise?
That depends on your priorities:
- Best weather: Caribbean sailings from December – April, Alaska sailings from June – August
- Best pricing: January, early May, September
- Best for themed experiences: Halloween on the High Seas, Very Merrytime Cruises, Marvel Days at Sea, Pixar Days at Sea
If you’re flexible, we often recommend shoulder seasons for the best balance of price and experience.
4. How far in advance should I book?
For Disney Cruise Line sailings, earlier is almost always better.
- Booking 12–18 months out = best pricing + best cabin selection
- Last-minute deals are rare (and usually limited)
5. What’s the difference between the Disney ships?

Each ship has its own personality:
- Classic ships: Magic & Wonder (smaller, more intimate)
- Dream class: Dream & Fantasy (great for families, more amenities)
- Newer ships: Wish, Treasure, Destiny (next-level theming and dining)
If you want help matching a ship to your travel style, that’s exactly where working with a travel agent makes a difference.
6. What is rotational dining?
This is one of Disney’s standout features.
Instead of eating in the same restaurant every night, you rotate between three themed restaurants. One of the best parts, your servers rotate with you.
By night two, they remember your drink order. By night three, they remember your kids’ favorite dessert.
7. Are Disney Cruises only for kids?
We love this Disney Cruise question, and its answer! Not even close. In fact, on many sailings, there are more adults cruising without kids than with kids (a fact we learned from our partner at Disney).
Disney does an excellent job balancing family fun with adult-only spaces:
- Quiet Cove Pool (adults only)
- Fine dining restaurants like Palo and Remy
- Lounges, beverage tastings, and nightlife
Many couples cruise Disney without kids and love it.
8. What ages are the kids clubs for?
Disney has one of the best youth programs at sea:
- It’s a Small World Nursery: 6 months–3 years (extra fee)
- Oceaneer Club/Lab: ages 3-10
- Edge: tweens (11-14)
- Vibe: teens (14-17)
Just be prepared, kids often beg to go back instead of staying with you.
9. Do I need a passport?
For most closed-loop cruises (departing and returning to the same U.S. port), a birth certificate + ID may work.
However, we strongly recommend a passport. Having one simplifies everything in case of emergencies or travel changes.
10. How do gratuities work?
Disney automatically adds recommended gratuities to your onboard account.
These cover:
- Dining team
- Stateroom host
You can prepay (we recommend this) or adjust onboard if needed.
11. What are Castaway Cay and Lighthouse Point?
Castaway Cay is Disney’s original private island in the Bahamas. Lighthouse Point is Disney’s private section of a 2nd island in the Bahamas. These tend to be highlights of Caribbean cruises (and some even stop at both!)
Expect:
- Beautiful beaches
- Included BBQ lunch
- Kids club on the island
- Adult-only beach
It’s one of the most seamless and relaxing port days you’ll experience.
12. Are excursions worth it?
This depends. Excursions offer a seamless way to see ports of call. But they aren’t necessary everywhere.
We recommend using a reputable 3rd party of taking Disney Excursions if you:
- Want to do a specific activity (e.g. whale watching in Alaska, visiting ruins in Mexico, snorkeling in the Caribbean)
- Don’t want to worry about transportation or any logistics while in Port.
- Want a “return to ship guarantee” which select tours and Disney offer. This is a big one for many people. Just like boarding on the first day, the ship will not wait for you at port. It is your responsibility to make sure you are back to the ship before “All Aboard”.
13. What should I pack for a Disney Cruise?
This will depend on your destination, but there are some basics you can count on packing. Plus, you’ll want to add some Disney fun to the mix.
Must-haves:
- Swimsuits (yes, even in cooler months)
- Pirate Night outfit for Caribbean sailings
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Light jacket/ shawl/ sweater for indoors. Air Conditioning feels cold after all day in the sun!
- Autograph book for kids
Optional but fun:
- Door decorations
- Disney-themed outfits
One of the benefits of working with us is that we send a personalized packing list to you before your cruise!
14. What is Pirate Night?

This is unique to Disney Cruise sailings. It is an event where:
- Pirate attire is encouraged for everyone (even the characters have special outfits)
- Special themed dinner is served
- Deck party + fireworks at sea (on select sailings). Both Mickey and his pals along with Jack Sparrow can be seen in different family and adult themed Pirate shows.
Yes, it’s as fun as it sounds.
15. Are drinks included?
Soft drinks, coffee, tea, and juice are included.
Alcohol, smoothies, and specialty coffee are extra.
16. How does boarding work?
Most guests will select a Port Arrival Time during check-in. If you are sailing in a concierge suite or taking Disney Transportation to the Cruise Terminal you will not need to select a time.
Once you arrive at the Cruise Terminal you will give your large suitcases with the appropriate luggage tags to the porters, go through security, and show your boarding pass and ID (again, we strongly recommend a passport). It all flows very smoothly and once this is done you will simply wait for your group to be called.
Once onboard:
- Lunch is available immediately
- Staterooms are ready in the afternoon
- Your vacation officially begins the moment you step on. You can explore the ship, check out the kids’ clubs, or jump in the pool.
17. What is a Navigator app?
The Disney Cruise Line Navigator app is essential onboard, and very helpful before you board.
It lets you:
- View daily schedules and menus
- Book activities
- Message family members
- Track characters and events
- See your current onboard account balance
18. Is Wi-Fi available?
Yes, but it’s expensive and not needed for everyone.
Packages are available, but many families choose to unplug and enjoy the experience.
19. Are Disney Cruises good for first-time cruisers?
They are arguably the best.
Why?
- Clear organization
- Exceptional service
- Family-friendly pacing
- No overwhelming “what do we do next?” feeling
20. How much does a Disney Cruise cost?
We get this Disney Cruise question a lot (actually, we get it for all cruise lines). Pricing varies widely depending on:
- Ship
- Itinerary
- Cabin type
- Travel dates
- Number of people in the room (the 3rd and 4th guest are cheaper than the first 2 in a stateroom)
Typical ranges:
- 3–4 night cruise: $2,500-$6,000+ for a family
- 7-night cruise: $5,000-$12,000+
This is where strategy (timing + cabin selection) really matters.
21. Should I use a travel agent for a Disney Cruise?
If you want to save time, reduce stress, and make smarter decisions – yes.
As travel agents who specialize in Disney, we can:
- Monitor pricing
- Recommend the right ship and itinerary
- Handle booking details
- Provide cruise and destination information leading up to your vacation
- Answer every question you didn’t even know to ask
