So, you are headed out on the open road – the sky is the limit! But what should you do to prepare for this memorable trip?

1. Make sure your vehicle is in tip top condition by checking the oil, tire treads, fluid levels and filters before you hit the road.
2. Check the road conditions for any closures or road construction that might impact driving times.
3. Pack some snacks and water. Fill a small cooler with some sandwiches, bars, and other family favorites. You never know when you’ll hit a long stretch of road with nothing available.
4. If you are traveling during the winter months and you will encounter snowy/icy conditions, pack a winter survival kit. Be sure to check out or Winter Survival Kit prep list!  
5. Destinations like National Parks get really busy during the summer months. Be sure to pre-plan lodging or campsite rentals.
6. Plan some road games! There are many magnetic games to entertain the kids as well as those great old stand-byes. Who doesn’t love a good game of Eye Spy or I’m going on a picnic?
7. Clean your vehicle beforehand. Yes, it will get messy and gross again, especially if you’ve got kiddos in the back, but starting out with a freshly cleaned vehicle will start the trip out right.
8. Invest in a small trash can to keep in the back seat. Doesn’t have to be fancy- just something the kids can dump their trash into (because my kids usually just dump things on the floor…).
9. If you are bringing tablets then be sure to remember headphones. Unless you love hearing your children argue about being able to hear their sibling’s tablet, headphones are a sanity saving game changer.
10. Have extra charging cables or portable charges readily available for anyone in the back seat to be able to grab.
