A Luxury Collection Hotel by Marriott

Upon disembarking from our river cruise adventure along the Danube, my husband and I rented a car from Passau and enjoyed sites along the German countryside on our two hour drive to Munich. It had been an amazing 7 night Viking river cruise filled with exploring new towns and lots of walking. We were ready for a night to re-charge during our one night stay in Munich before our flight departed for a long trip home the next morning. I am a longtime fan of Marriott properties, and was thrilled to discover this brand new property recently added to their Luxury Collection.

The Koenigshof Munich had opened only three months prior to our arrival. The hotel stands in the place of what used to house a private mansion right in the hustle and bustle of the Stachus square. Its description boasted an atmosphere of sophisticated ease – and it did not disappoint.

We chose to drop off our rental care at the city center location. While it was an easy 3-4 blocks walk from the vehicle rental office to Koenigshof – it was a toasty 90ish degrees outside. Feeling like ragamuffins we entered into the Koenigshof and were immediately greeted by a warm welcome from staff and some very refreshing air conditioning.

The main floor of the Koenigshof does not house the main lobby. Instead it is a staging area to greet visitors, store baggage, and to offer assistance to guests with whatever they may need. Our welcome staff kindly offered to take our bags (we travel lightly and only had carry-on luggage), gave us a brief overview of the hotel, and escorted us up to the third floor to the lobby and guest services. We sat down with another staff member who began what was more of an “introduction” process than how you regularly envision checking into a hotel. As this staff explained the background of the Koenigshof and what to expect from the property, we were given cold wash clothes to wipe our hands and faces and a glass of Ruinart champagne to enjoy. Our concierge then escorted us up to our seventh floor level room. Along the way, he pointed out the two lounges that were housed in the lobby on the third, and he explained how to use the elevator (specifically that we needed to swipe our key card to access any of the levels with rooms on it).

We were immediately impressed with our room, room 718, which was a Deluxe Guest room with a king bed (see a full room tour here). It was extremely spacious, clean and had well thought out amenities. Our concierge also demonstrated how to use the black out and sun curtains that were available and controlled via switches located next to the closet, as well as intrusions on how to use the thermostat. Which we immediately set as cold as possible…

Upon entering the room, to our right there was a long bench and two separate sections that made up the closet. The first section housed hangers for hanging clothes. The second had a small set of drawers, a safe, a shoe service, and an ironing board that pulled out with an iron. To our left was a dedicated toilet room and a dedicated room with a shower. The shower boasted two heads – one that came directly down from the ceiling, and the other a more traditional European set up of a nozzle connected to a pole that you could adjust the height on, along with luxury toiletries. There was also a hair dryer available in a drawer below the sink. On either side of the bed were 220v outlets with USB-C adapters for charging devices. Each side of the bed had light switches to control the room lights and a reading light. The bed, pillows, and bedding were extremely comfortable and soft. The room was also soundproofed very well, and we did not hear any street noise despite the businesses of the area.

To our left was a dedicated toilet room and a dedicated room with a shower. The shower boasted two heads – one that came directly down from the ceiling, and the other a more traditional European set up of a nozzle connected to a pole that you could adjust the height on, along with luxury toiletries. There was also a hair dryer available in a drawer below the sink.

In the room there was a small table with two chairs for lounging. The dresser that sat under the wall mounted TV had a mini fridge stocked with complimentary water, soda, and beer. Instead of having drawers for clothing storage the drawers had complimentary coffee and tea to be used with the Nespresso machine provided, as well as a small bottle of red wine with opener and wine glasses – again, all complimentary. Moments after settling in we heard a knock on the door; another staff was there to offer turn down service, refresh the mini bar, and also to gift a small plate of fruits and macaroon with a thank you note for being guests of the hotel.

Before heading out to dinner at a nearby Italian restaurant that was recommended by the concierge, we enjoyed a glass of rosé wine in The Green cocktail lounge on the third floor. The lounge offered both inside and outdoor seating, and overlooked the Stachus square. The outdoor seating was limited, and smoking was allowed in outdoor spaces, but it was an amazing view where you felt a part of the bustling energy of the square, whilst also enjoying the comfort of being a part of it from afar.

Breakfast the next morning was served in the restaurant on the ninth floor. We had hoped to enjoy dinner the night before there, but it was closed on Sundays. So we were grateful to be able to see the space for our quick breakfast before heading to the airport. There was a beautiful sprawling spread of traditional European breakfast – fruits, yogurts, breads, cheeses – and a menu to order from. Given our time constraint we chose not to order from the menu, but it had a variety of options that looked delicious. We enjoyed a black coffee and cappuccino along with a variety of food offered from the buffet. This restaurant also had an outdoor component with a similar view overlooking the Stachus square of The Green located on the third floor.

On our way to the ground floor we again stopped in at the lobby to check out and to have them arrange a taxi to take us to the airport. We had another guest services member assist in getting our luggage downstairs to the main floor and to make sure that our taxi driver, who spoke no English, fully understood what terminal to take us to at the airport.

The only disappointment we experienced during our stay was that the gym was not yet open, being that the hotel was still so new. The bathroom door was also fairly heavy and it closed pretty quickly- so if you were up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom it was an extra step to make sure you closed the door quietly in order to not disturb anyone else in the room.

Next time we are in Munich we will definitely re-visit this property. The staff spoke impeccable English and made us feel instantly welcome, despite showing us showing up sweaty, flustered, and in clothing we had clearly been traveling in for awhile.
