The city blends royal tradition with modern energy in a way that keeps families engaged, entertained, and constantly learning without even realizing it.

If you’re planning a family trip to London (especially with kids or teens), these five can’t-miss experiences deliver the perfect mix of iconic sights, hands-on fun, and memorable moments you’ll talk about long after you return home.

London is near and dear to my (Lee’s) heart. I spent 5 months there studying abroad, met amazing friends, and felt like I could’ve left it all behind to move to London in a heartbeat. So I have been dreaming of bringing my family and showing them all my faves for literally years! Finally, the stars aligned and we decided to bring the family to watch the Vikings play in October 2025. For me- instant excitement and anxiety! Trying not to pull the kids from too much school we made it a short weekend, and of course Sunday would be dedicated to American football…. And there’s so much to see and do I had to narrow it down to a few very select experiences (knowing we will be back with more time in the future).

So in this special London feature blog you’re getting a dose of reality on how even the best laid plans for a quick jaunt across the pond, and those game changing memorable photos of your beautiful family your dreaming of…. can be spoiled by the beautiful ages of 11 and 14… Because reality is that kids are kids, and maybe they don’t appreciate as much as we want them to in the moment, but they’ll thank us. Some day…

1. Watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace

Few experiences feel as quintessentially London as the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. The ceremony is full of pageantry, think marching soldiers in red tunics, bearskin hats, and a live military band, that immediately captures kids’ attention while giving adults a real sense of British tradition.

Planning tip: Pair this experience with a stroll through nearby St. James’s Park, one of London’s most beautiful green spaces. Kids can watch ducks and swans, spot the famous pelicans, and burn off energy before the next sightseeing stop. It’s an easy, low-stress way to balance crowds with downtime.

Reality tip: Maybe don’t force your family to do this as a quick “we’re only here for 2 days and we need to see this” when they’re super focused on that Vikings game and tailgating you’re all headed to in an hour… I think the family lasted a whopping 20 minutes. But it was documented!

2. Climb to the Top of St. Paul’s Cathedral

For families with older kids and teens, climbing the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral is both an adventure and a history lesson rolled into one. The climb involves over 500 steps, but it’s broken into stages that make it manageable—and exciting.

Know before you go: This experience isn’t ideal for very young children or anyone with mobility concerns. Wear comfortable shoes and plan to visit earlier in the day before legs get tired.

3. Discover the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London

If London had a real-life storybook setting, the Tower of London would be it. This historic fortress delivers everything families love: castles, legends, royal drama, and dazzling treasures.

Travel tip: Arrive when the Tower opens to avoid long lines for the Crown Jewels, especially during school holidays and summer travel months.

4. Feel the Energy of a London Football Match

Even if your family isn’t made up of die-hard sports fans, attending a live football match in London is an unforgettable cultural experience. The energy inside the stadium is electric, with chants, cheers, and nonstop action that pulls everyone in.

Good to know: If you are going to a football (not American) game – team colors are LEGIT. You will need to choose what team’s section to sit in, and you will be asked not to wear any colors of the opposing team. So choose wisely!

Reality Tip: Not many here – just enjoy the game, even if you could care less about football and this is your one and done game. Oh- the drinks are WAY more reasonable even with the unfavorable exchange rate. So enjoy!!

5. Enjoy Pub Culture – Family Style

One of the most authentic ways to experience London is by spending time at a traditional British pub – and yes, many are very family-friendly during daytime and early evening hours.

This is where London slows down just enough to let you soak it all in – the conversations, the architecture, and the everyday rhythm of local life.

Reality Tip: Your kids probably won’t love this. But tell them that they can force their own kids to do it someday when they return with their families in 20 years…

Making London Work for Families

London rewards travelers who plan thoughtfully. Balancing iconic sights with parks, food breaks, and hands-on experiences keeps kids engaged and parents relaxed. Public transportation is easy to navigate, many museums are free (major perk!! Which we didn’t experience due to time, but we will in the future), and neighborhoods each offer a distinct personality worth exploring.

Whether you’re watching royal guards march in perfect unison, standing atop St. Paul’s with the city spread out below you, or cheering alongside locals at a football match, London creates shared moments that truly stick.
